How do you know if car needs freon or A/C is out?

The A/C in my car recently stopped working. When I try to turn it on, it doesn't blow any air. At first, it sounds like its starting up, but then quickly the sound dies away. The car is a 2004 Honda Accord. Is it out of freon? Could it be that simple? Or am I looking at a full blown air conditioner repair? Please help; I live in Florida and its freaking hot out. :(
