Can you be billed 3 years after a service was provided?

Question

I had my air conditioner repaired. I paid for the service and kept the receipt. I got a bill from the AC company threatening to send me to collections if I didn't pay up? I showed them the receipt with an invoice number and they said they needed a bank or credit card statement. The problem is I can't track down the payment since it was so long ago. Isn't there a time limit? Can someone really send you a bill 3 years later.

I'm not sure but that sounds kind of fishy. Did you ever pay the bill? If you never paid it, then you do owe them money..
