How do you break the ice with people you have met recently?

Hi. I think I am not very good at this. It seems to take a while for me to break the ice with people. I can only break the ice with a very small amount of people. Most people I talk to I never end up breaking the ice with them.

What are some good ways or tips to break the ice with people I know so they become friends and not acquantiances? Thanks.
